Unity Children Mission

Every child is a capital.

BACKGROUND

Poor, destitute abused people inhabit Githogoro slum ranking among the poorest people.  According to our economic social research survey, their practical living occupations include:-

(i)      Local illicit liquor brewing.

(ii)     Small – scale businesses and food kiosks.

(iii)    Only 30% or less than employed as subordinate/casual laborers.

(iv)    Commercial sex activities.

(v)     Drug trafficking/smuggling agents.

(vi)    Crime skills.

The highlighted net factors have incubated crime skills, spread of HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, illiteracy, family dysfunction and early attrition from school of children brought up in these social vices as they try to survive in these harsh environments.

Most of the families consist of single parent families and the number of orphans has risen significantly mostly due to the increased HIV/AIDS prevalence rates.

The number of people living with Aids has significantly increased and their living hope is frustrated by lack of medical services and literature materials to guide them on how to live positively with AIDS.

Better part of the population gets placements in casual working conditions earning less than 1$ per day which has to be apportioned to their food, shelter, medical care and education budget.

This has therefore, accelerated high illiteracy levels, crime index, poverty index and health hazards all shielded by the high cost of living due to law national GDP per capital.

Government provided free basic education has made a difference for the marginalized poor, however, a significant number of children are still unable to attend school due to lack of proper care at home.
